According to the New York Times Sunday Book Review, Jonathan Franzen's book Freedom heads the year's ten best books. Followed by:

  5. I'm late at responding to this but Freedom definitely has my vote. I loved it, even with all the hoopla surrounding Franzen. I also liked Egan's A Visit from the Good Squad, but it's not for everyone as the structure is quite different. I have read many of the New Yorker stories in the New Yorker, and I have Room on my list. Would love to read Cleopatra, but don't think I'll have time. Whew.
